On the Sunday 21st May 2017, Grant, Greg and Dickie will be taking on the Slateman Triathlon in Snowdonia National Park. Consisting of a 1km open water swim, 51km road cycle and 11km trial run, it's certainly not a challenge for the fainthearted.
Our chosen charity is extremely close to all our hearts. littlelifts support women facing treatment for primary breast cancer at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) by providing them with a littlelifts comfort box at the beginning of their chemotherapy treatment. Every year at the NNUH approximately 520 women are treated for primary breast cancer with chemotherapy – that’s 43 women a month.
In 2014, at the age of 28, Oa was diagnosed with primary breast cancer. What followed was a whirlwind of emotions and medical appointments before she began her chemotherapy treatment. It was a scary time, with lots of uncertainty and an overwhelming sense of the unknown.
Leading up to and during her treatment, Oa was fortunate to have a support network of friends and family to help her along the way – lifting those down days with a few little treats to relieve some of the side effects she experienced. The impact these small tokens had on Oa’s wellbeing was huge, and so the concept of ‘littlelifts’ was born.
Comfort boxes contain specially selected items to help alleviate some of the side effects that patients may experience during chemotherapy. Our hope is that they have a positive impact on patients’ emotional wellbeing as well as providing practical support during what can be a very difficult time.
Below are just some of the little gifts to be found in the box
Herbal Tea: To aid sleep, help calm and hydrate
Water bottle: The oncology team will recommend drinking plenty of fluids
Hand cream: To give dry hands a little extra moisture during treatment
Soft toothbrush: A soft toothbrush helps to avoid discomfort if gums get sore
Pedometer: Keeping on the move during treatment is good for the mind, helps to energise and motivate
Eye mask: For when a little extra sleep might be needed
